Best AI Agents for Small Business and Solo Founders
The best AI agents for a small business take real tasks off the owner's list, such as research, drafts, checklists and listings, and leave the result for review. For a founder whose work lives in files, xSquads gives you a squad of 2 or 3 role-based bots on your own folders. For browser and app tasks, Grok Bot and Meta Muse run agents on their own cloud computers.

xSquads for Work
- Best for: a founder whose work lives in files, and who wants to review the result before it counts as done.
- Where it runs: a desktop app on your own folders. Mac now, with Windows coming soon.
- Watch out: it does not drive a browser through other websites. If the task lives in web apps, look at Grok Bot or Muse below. The product page is xSquads for Work.
Grok Bot (x.ai)
- Best for: work that needs a browser, a filesystem and a terminal, and that should continue with the laptop closed.
- Where it runs: one persistent cloud computer, shared by every bot on the account. The desktop app runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. The mobile app runs on iPhone, iPad and Android. The computers run in Cursor's cloud. Grok Bot overview.
- Watch out: files, browser sessions and app logins on that computer are available to every bot you run. Access is included with paid Cursor plans or a linked SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus or SuperGrok Heavy subscription. The overview points the numbers at x.ai's own plans page.
Muse by Meta
- Best for: a personal agent for life and work in a browser and in connected apps. Meta's page includes Muse for Small Business, a set of skills and connectors for a small-business owner.
- Where it runs: chat in the Muse app on mobile or Mac, or in WhatsApp, on Muse Secure VM, a persistent isolated Linux computer with a full browser. Muse by Meta.
- Watch out: Muse is free with a usage limit, and a paid subscription exists if you want more. Meta also says the Mac app works with desktop files, apps and browser tabs, which sits beside the VM. Read Meta's page for that boundary.
OpenMausBot
- Best for: a free, open-source app that turns agent CLIs you already run into bots.
- Where it runs: a desktop app on macOS, Windows and Ubuntu. A computer, in the docs, can be your desktop, an isolated local VM, Boat, or your own VPS. Engines named in the docs include Claude, Codex, Grok, Cursor and local models. OpenMausBot docs.
- Watch out: you bring your own AI account or API key, and provider fees and limits still apply. The project says it is not affiliated with xAI. OpenMausBot and the GitHub README.
Lindy
- Best for: work that already happens in Slack and in connected apps.
- Where it runs: Lindy's docs describe summoning it with an @mention in Slack. The changelog describes giving the agent its own cloud computer, so a routine is not tied to the laptop being open. What is Lindy? and the changelog.
- Watch out: ask for a dashboard or a report and Lindy builds and hosts it at its own address, rather than handing you a file in a folder you already have. Artifacts. The longer, sourced comparison is xSquads for Work vs Lindy.
What should a small business look for?
A small business does not need a catalogue of fifty agents. It needs a few roles that match the work already on the list: research, a draft, a follow-up, a checklist, a pass over the files that have to stay consistent. The test is simple. Can you point the agents at a folder you already use, and can you see what they changed before it counts as done?
On xSquads, each person gets a squad on a shared task board (Backlog to Done). You approve, edit, or send a card back. xSquads for Work is the product page.
How is this different for solo founders?
AI agents for solo founders is the same job with no one else to hand it to. A solo founder is the marketing team, the operator and often the person who also ships the product.
An AI employee for a small business is not a hire you do not have to manage. It is a role you delegate to, the way you would a careful assistant, and the review stays yours.
A one-person company is a strong fit and an easy place to get the product wrong. One shared login for the company hides whose files were used and who accepted the draft. A squad that belongs to the founder makes the responsibility obvious. You set the mission, you point it at your folder, you read the result.
AI agents for startups are adjacent. A startup may have two or three people and the same pile of unwritten plans. The useful pattern is still one squad per person, because each person has different files and a different definition of done.
What work is worth delegating?
Delegate work you can check in a sitting:
- A first draft of a plan, a listing or a customer email, written from notes you already have
- Research with the sources attached, so you can open them
- A checklist for a launch, a filing or a weekly review
- A pass that makes names, links and docs agree
What gets escalated, not executed: refunds, cancellations, bulk deletions, the final pricing or legal call. That rule is on xSquads for Work. A squad that invents a metric is not helping. Ask it to flag the claim it cannot support. Then you write the sentence you are willing to stand behind.
Where do ChatGPT and Copilot stop being enough?
Most founders already have a chat assistant. It is good at a rewrite, a summary and a brainstorm. It runs out when the work has to land in the folder, stay there, and be reviewed as a change rather than as a message you copy out by hand.
Microsoft Copilot alternatives covers the Microsoft 365 path, with Microsoft's pages linked. xSquads for Work compared with Grok Bot cites x.ai on the split between a cloud computer and your own files. What does setup look like when you are the only operator?
You do not need a programme. You need one folder and one mission. Start with the setup our own launch used: a Growth Lead, a Dev and a Store Manager. Two or three bots is the smallest setup that works, and a squad of one is fine. Give them the goal and the constraint: do not invent numbers, do not send anything, put the draft in this folder.
Then use the board. Cards move without you routing every step. You show up when the work is ready to read. If the company grows, each new person gets their own squad rather than sharing yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best AI agents for small business?
The shortlist here is xSquads for Work, Grok Bot, Meta Muse, OpenMausBot and Lindy. xSquads is the desktop squad on your own files, with Review before the work counts. Grok Bot and Muse run on their own cloud computers. OpenMausBot is the open-source app. Lindy is the Slack and connected-app option. Each description is limited to what that vendor publishes.
Are AI agents for solo founders different from AI agents for small business?
The work is the same and the headcount is not. A solo founder is every role at once, so the squad has to cover research, drafts and follow-through without a team to absorb the gaps. The founder still reviews. A small team uses the same pattern, one squad per person.
Do AI agents for startups replace the first hires?
No. They take drafts, research and checklists off the list so the founder can spend time on the decisions only a person can make. Hiring is still the right move when you need judgment you cannot review in a sitting, or a skill the squad does not have.
What is an AI employee for a small business?
In practice it is a role you delegate to, not a person on the payroll. A useful AI employee has a job, a folder and a review step. It should not send, spend or sign on its own. Refunds, cancellations, bulk deletions and the final pricing or legal call get escalated, not executed.
Can one person run a squad without a technical setup?
Yes. You point a mission at a folder, name the roles and state what done means. The bots pick up cards. You read what they changed. xSquads for Work is the longer version of those steps, and there is no code requirement in that description.
Is xSquads free?
Yes. xSquads for Work is free, and you get it by joining the waitlist with your name, work email, company URL and the area you plan to use it in. We send the download link when it is ready. You can start from the xSquads web app at app.xsquads.ai in the meantime.
What should a solo founder not delegate?
Do not delegate sending, paying, signing, or any claim you cannot check. Do not ask a squad to invent customers, metrics or quotes. Keep the decisions that define the company, and use the squad for the preparation you can verify.
